OUTLAWS
TAKE ON THE MANOR
In the lead up
to the forthcoming Yanks Weekend & Gary’s Picnic at Shakespeare
County Raceway, the Supercharged Outlaw Teams led by Roy Wilding and
Brian Gandy made the trip yesterday to Drayton Manor Park for the 16th
annual NASC Neil’s Springnationals, writes SCR’s Promotions man
Jerry Cookson.
“Although the show field was filled to capacity with rods and customs,
both Roy and Brian entertained hundreds of onlookers by starting their
cars several times throughout the day which ended in a mini cacklefest
minutes before the main prize giving,” says Jerry.
“SCR owes a great debt of thanks to both teams for supporting the
event and giving up their valuable weekend time, especially as Brian’s
altered was still in pieces late Saturday evening following a delay in
parts, but thanks to a last minute thrash and a quick test fire on
Brian’s front drive late in the evening (much to the amusement of the
street I’m led to believe), the job was completed with both teams
arriving at the Park dead on nine Sunday morning.
“SCR
also would like to thank NASC Chairman Mark Ashman and his merry band of
helpers for making us feel at home throughout the day and my personal
thanks to Brian for allowing me to sit in his altered during the last
cacklefest start up.”
Yanks
Weekend is scheduled for 31st May/1st June at
Shakspeare County culminating in the thirtieth running of Gary
Healey’s American dream; Gary’s Picnic.

Test & Tune weekend
19-20th April Shakespeare county raceway
The weather turned out to be the winner with a biting cold wind and
rain non of the outlaws present turned a wheel.I am writing this after
leaving the track at noon on Sunday and it did not look promising that any
cars would get down the track.
I did speak with Steve Goode and had a look at the new engine in the
wobble altered and my what a piece of kit it is. a monster alcohol car set
up with twin mags and a giant buzzard catcher, this car is going to be
very quick when Steve gets used to driving it.

The other car in attendance was Paul Watts. Paul drove up from the Isle of
Wight to sit in the pits for two days and then drive all the way home.
Paul also had the misfortune that some one vandalized his trailer
whilst driving up to shakey, it seems some one purposely smashed both rear
lights whilst he was in a service station.
Paul will be back at the end of May
Supercharged Outlaws AGM
1st March 2008 Ettington Community Centre.
The meeting was well-attended with over 30 people in the hall by the
start of the meeting.
Dave McKenzie opened the meeting with a recap on the 2007 season. Dave
said he thought the season, although starting off slowly, gained as the
season progressed.
The turning point was the Northern Nationals at York Raceway with seven
cars in attendance.
Seven cars followed again at the Hot Rod Drags, with all putting on a
good show.
The season finished with Lee Gallimore taking the series as the number
one man.
All the cars that turned out in 2007 were of an excellent standard and
the teams should be proud of themselves.
The outlook for 2008 is very promising and with the resurgence of
interest in the Supercharged Outlaws, the season can only be better with
rounds being run at all three tracks.
Dave then invited Jerry Cookson to take to the floor and Jerry thanked
the outlaws for inviting him along. Jerry talked about the track at
Shakespeare County Raceway and the intended improvements to the track
including the building of their own jet track dryer, which, hopefully,
will be ready mid-season. Jerry also offered the Outlaws space to have a
static display at the Springspeed Nationals and the Open Sport
Nationals. We hope to take Jerry up on his offer.
The meeting then went into the official stage of voting in a committee.
This was done with Dave McKenzie again being voted in as Chairman, Lee
Gallimore as Treasurer, Roy Wilding as Tech & Safety Advisor, Chris
Pattison as committee member. Also co-opted in as a non-member advisor
on safety issues was Norm Wheeldon to assist Roy in an outsider role.
Next up were the finances for last season and the balance sheet was
accepted as correct.
The calendar for the Supercharged Outlaws was debated and one date was
changed. Jerry kindly offered us the Halloween Showdown as our final
meeting instead of the 27th Sept which clashes with the National Finals
at Santa Pod.
The calendar now for 2008 is
April 19/20th
Test & Tune SCR non points
May 31/ June 1st
Yanks Weekend SCR 1st round
June 28/29th
Truck Show Santa Pod 2nd round
Aug 2/3rd
Northern Nationals York Raceway 3rd round
Aug 8/9th
Bulldog bash SCR 4th round
Oct 25/26th
Halloween Bonfire Burn-Up SCR 5th round
It was decided that all teams could
drop one event so points count from any 4 from 5 events. It was also
voted in that in 2008 all cars will run voluntary diapers with this rule
becoming mandatory for 2009.
Another vote was for chassis regs. As we run mostly at RWYB events we do
not come under the MSA but we are to recommend that all cars in 2009
have a chassis tag to enhance the safety aspect of our class. If you do
not have a chassis tag it will be the discretion of the scrutineers if
you are allowed to run
The points
system was also decided and will be added to the rules at a drivers
meeting at the first round.
The Supercharged Outlaws now have 20 teams signed up for the 2008
season.

to the Supercharged Outlaws and also thanked everybody for their

September 2007
Hot Rod Drags
Excellent weather, a good turn out of six cars
two drivers running PBs and a fair bit of attrition.
Attending this event were Lee Gallimore Red Mist altered, Roy Wilding
Hemi Hunter slingshot, Dave McKenzie Thing 5 altered, Brian Gandy
altered, Frank Griffin Pop, Tony Smith faster Pussy cat altered, missing
from the line up was Alec Coe he had set off from Ramsgate but had
problems with the tow van and had to turn back.
First session on Saturday saw Roy Wilding paired against Lee Gallimore
both cars put in strong passes Lee’s car stopped in the shutdown area
and had to be towed off. Next pair up was Dave McKenzie and Frank
Griffin and a couple of storming burnouts, then both cars had to be
shutdown on the start line due to Lee being stranded in the shutdown
area.
On the restart it was Dave on a single as Frank had developed an oil
leak from the crankshaft seal which would put him out for the rest of
the weekend, Dave ran his usual side to side typical altered run
resulting in a PB of 9.3 at only 136mph.
Next out was Brian Gandy nice burnout and on the run the burst panel
went and Brian sidelined the car and had to be towed off.
Last up, by no mean’s least, Tony Smith with the faster pussycat to
put in another checkout pass in this new car.
The second session saw Roy Wilding paired with Dave McKenzie. Roy did
his burnout first and Dave decided just to do a short burnout, both cars
staged and Dave was out in front of Roy at the sixty foot mark. At half
track Dave was still in front and on the finish line Roy piped Dave by a
margin of .003 sec to take the win, Dave was non to disappointed though
he had just run his first eight 8.9 @ 155mph setting both PB’s in et
and mph.
Next up was Lee Gallimore and Tony Smith another good run from Lee and
an improving run for Tony he also setting a new PB.
Frank and Brian sat out this round.
Round three on Sunday First pair out were Roy Wilding against Tony
Smith. Tony lost drive from his gearbox to leave Roy on a single -
another nice pass from Roy.
Next up was Brian Gandy, Brian is getting the hang of driving this
altered, Brian left on the green and there was a bang at half track.
When the car was stripped back at the pits the damage was horrendous two
rods had broken and instead of coming out the side of the block they
came up through the valley trashing this engine.
The Final pair in this session was Lee Gallimore and Dave McKenzie this
would decide the No 1 Plate for next season and both were up for it.
Both cars fired up and sounded strong, Lee into his burnout first. Dave
chirped into the water and the engine just cut out , Mark quickly got
the battery pack and tried to restart the car but it would not turn over
and Lee was signalled to a single run and oh boy what a run Lee was out
the box like a rocket and stormed to a new personal best of 7.6 @ 181
mph. Dave would not have lived with that so a deserving win for Lee who
will carry the no 1 plate next season.
Dave received a slap on the wrist from the team when it was realised
that the reason the car would not turn over trying to restart was that
Dave left it in drive and the inhibitor would not allow the car to
start, driver error (I will not make that mistake again say’s Dave)
The final session on Sunday saw Lee out on his own and he was going to
try a first gear launch (yes he had run 7.6 in a high gear only pass). On
the hit the car turned sharp left and Lee was off the throttle and then
back on for a 9 second pass. To round out an excellent weekend.
The supercharged outlaws would like to thank the marshals and track crew
for all there efforts and for a great track to run on. Next year is
looking good for the Supercharged Outlaws with regular fields of eight
to ten cars.
Keep up to date with the outlaws on there new web site at
7th August 2007
What a weekend for the supercharged outlaws,
the action had moved north to York raceway and the two outlaw cars of
Lee Gallimore and Dave McKenzie were to tie up with Mark Flavell and his
Super Pro ET car to be driven by Des Taylor and run a round robin of
races. On the Saturday in the first round of qualifying there was a bit
of confusion in the pairing lanes. We were supposed to wait for the jet
car to go but we were waved through and ended up running in the Wild
Bunch slot. Dave had B Sting along side him and could not understand
why, but it was too late to worry about it so he went through his
routine and left on the green to pull his best 60 foot time yet in the
car a 1.2 sec and an eighth mile time of 6.1 seconds. Lee Gallimore
followed on with a bye run and got wildly out of shape in the shut down
area with a severe case of bounce which pulled the butterfly wheel out
of his hands. Lee said afterwards he really thought he was going to lose
it but he managed to keep it on the track.Des Taylor followed up after
the jet car with a strong solo pass with a low 5 second pass.In the
second round of qualifying Dave and Lee went out side by side for the
first time. Both cars pulled strong burnouts and Lee was away first at
the lights but Dave chased hard and nearly pipped Lee on the line. Both
drivers were on and off the throttle for a bit of a pedal fest and the
crowed loved it, the margin at the line was only 100th
sec.that was a really good side by side race.Des Taylor then did a solo
qualifying run with a strong burnout a very strong run to put in the
quickest run so far.Onto Sunday and we were scheduled to do 1 more
qualifier and then the finals, but after a discussion with Steve Murty
we put in an extra qualifier. This is where it started to get
interesting because in the pits was Roy Wilding with the Hemi Hunter
Slingshot and Roy joined in the show to run a four car field on the
Sunday. The first pair out on Sunday was a David and Goliath affair with
Dave (fuzzie) McKenzie up against the big man himself Roy Wilding in
Hemi Hunter. Both cars pulled good burnouts and on the lights Roy was
too keen and pulled a red light and Dave went chasing after him with a
good run.The second pair was Des Taylor up against Lee Gallimore, Des
proved to strong for Lee and took the win.In the second round of Sunday
only two cars made it to the line - Dave McKenzie up against Des Taylor.
Again Des was too keen and pulled a red light leaving Dave to chase him
up the track. It seems everyone wants to get away from the little Purple
Altered - we must frighten the opposition into mistakes because the
Altered was tending to use up a lot of the track. It was commented on
that “we did not know that drag cars did drifting!”The Final for the
outlaw’s was Dave versus Lee and Lee was on a mission. Both cars left
at the same time but Lee was pulling away from Dave all the time to run
a 5.8 seconds. Dave on the other side was having another wild ride with
the car turning right on the hit but Dave managed to bring it back, but
by then Lee was long gone. The final pair was Roy Wilding versus Des
Taylor. Des wanted to try for the track record on this run and opted to
run the quarter mile and Roy was going to do the eighth. Roy was away
first and on a charge. By half track Des was past Roy and to the stripe
in 7.9 seconds. Roy was out of it at the eighth.
Lee Recieves his
trophy from Steve
More news on the Outlaws front to come out on Sunday was that Brian
Gandy was there debuting his brand new Altered. Brian just wanted to put
in a couple of familiarisation passes to get used to the car and it
looked real good, so Brian will be out with the Outlaws next year.

Also another car was to be debuted today and that was Tony Smith with
his Topolino Blown Altered called the Faster Pussy Cat. Again all Tony
wanted to do was the same as Brian and get used to the Car. I was in the
shutdown area when Tony came up the track and he was a very happy man.

There was another blown car there as well that of Ian Hanson in his
immaculate blown Corvette but sadly Ian had problems on Saturday on his
first burnout the car stopped.
I believe it was due to a sticking valve so that put Ian out for the
rest of the weekend. In all it was a really good weekend with seven blown
cars in attendance and we would all like to thank Steve Murty and the
York crew for a fantastic weekend.
23rd July 2006
The York meeting on the 4/5th
August has now got two confirmed entries with the two points leaders
going head to head over the York 1/4 mile. Lee having missed the second
round because of holidays is keen to catch back up to Dave in the points
chase so he is traveling all the way up from Kidderminster. On the other
hand this is Dave's home track and will be keen to do well against Lee
in front of his locals. whatever the outcome we hope Lee and Dave put on
a good show for the friendly Northern drag fans and show what the
supercharged outlaws is all about. During the time between rounds both
Lee and Dave have been flying the flag at different shows with static
displays and firing up there respective cars to spread the word to fans
who do not normally visit the drag strip and we hope this will encourage
them to make a first trip to the tracks.Look forward to seeing you all
at York.
